Tor Browser 6.5 Gets First Point Release to Support Tor 0.2.9.10, OpenSSL 1.0.2k
Tor Browser 6.5.1 is now available for download
The Tor Project announced the immediate availability of the first point release of the Tor Browser 6.5 stable branch of the open-source, Firefox-based anonymity web browser with enhanced security and privacy features based on Tor.
Tor Browser 6.5.1 appears to be a minor release in the 6.5 series, adding support for the latest technologies, including the Tor 0.2.9.10 anonymous network, OpenSSL 1.0.2k, HTTPS-Everywhere 5.2.11, Torbutton 1.9.6.14, as well as all the security updates that Mozilla patched in the recently released Firefox 45.8.0 ESR web browser.
"This release features important security updates to Firefox," reads the announcement. "In Tor Browser 6.5 we introduced filtering of content requests to resource:// and chrome:// URIs in order to neuter a fingerprinting vector. This change however breaks the Session Manager addon."
Linux bug fixes, translations updated
This first maintenance update to the Tor Browser 6.5 stable series also addresses a bug for GNU/Linux platforms by updating the "Using a system-installed Tor" section in start script, and updates various language translations. A regression introduced in the Tor Browser 6.5 release related to the resizing of the main window is yet to be resolved.
You can download Tor Browser 6.5.1 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windowsoperating systems right now from our website, and we strongly recommend that you update your installations as soon as possible. Please keep in mind to restart any Tor Browser instance you're running for the new version to take effect.
Also today, Tor Project released the second Alpha build of the upcoming major Tor Browser 7.0 release, which is still based on the Mozilla Firefox 45.8.0 ESR (Extended Support Release) web browser, but ships with Tor 0.3.0.4 RC, OpenSSL 1.0.2k, Torbutton 1.9.7.1, HTTPS-Everywhere 5.2.11, and various bug fixes. A hardened version of Tor Browser 7.0 Alpha 2 is also available for download from the links above.
